Waste disposal is a great challenge for many cities. Waste disposal pits are few and burning them is no longer appealing. So waste to energy projects has certain charm to provide green energy. However, waste segregation is tough ask and homogenous waste are hard to find. Depending on urban waste – a suitable technology like gasification or biological technology like bacterial fermentation can be used to produce a usable bio fuel.
Sometimes, a crude form of pelletization are made which reduces moisture/grit and sand are made as pellets and is used in boilers to generate power. With more smart cities the world waste generation is expected to reach 2.2 billion tonnes per year by 2024. Whichever way we look – gigantic generation of waste has immense potential as biomass !
